The Pre-Stream

So you’re ready to digitally share your live show with the world but the over-saturation of the internet waves can make it seem daunting – how on earth are you going to stand out?!

I’m here to help you get your mind around it so you can rock it. This is just the 1st in the series, focusing on what you need to think about and work on in week(s) leading up to your event.

Next week for part 2 I’ll be going over the hours leading up to your show. Parts 3 & 4 will focus on tips for during your stream and after. I intend on putting all this helpful info into a PDF booklet that I will make available for download.

1. Strategize!

It’s important to think about what you want to achieve, and how you are going to accomplish that when you broadcast your performance. Look at what successful & established artists are doing with their performances to get some ideas. Consider:

What is your goal?

  • Expanding your audience and getting those eyeballs on your feeds?
  • Increasing your followers?
  • Connecting with your existing audience?
  • Fundraising?
  • Income?
  • There’s no wrong answer but make sure you are certain you know why you’re doing this;

When will you go live?

If you are trying to expand your reach and broaden your audience, consider:

  • What time zone is your desired audience in?
  • When is a good time for them to watch you?
  • Are there any other big events, online or otherwise, that you would be competing with?
  • Will you have an opportunity to remind them moments before going live?

Where will it be hosted?

What online platforms does your audience or potential audience use the most? What will be most accessible to them? (If you ask me, Zoom, Youtube or Twitch are the best. More people (myself included) are opting out of networks like FB or IG. Older audiences are much less likely to be on IG, Snapchat, or TikTok. StreamYard can cross stream your performance to different platforms. What are you going to make yourself accessible to the people you want to see you?

  • Side Door sets up ticketed online shows that can generate some great income – Steven Page has been sold out his shows at 1000 people for 4 weeks in a row! Side Door does take a small cut for administration. (payment processing, promoting, hosting), but you don’t have any other overhead so even if you don’t sell out, you’re making something! The Zoom room can be a cool atmosphere if your fans turn on the cameras (keep ’em muted til applause time) you can see their faces as they enjoy your music, and they can connect with one another & with you in the chat.
  • In Canada, specifically, there are also quite a few granting organizations dedicated to paying artists for their online performances – Toronto City Hall Live, National Arts Centre, Music Together Ontario, etc. ((Once I get the Resources & Links tab live I will have a comprehensive list for you))
  • Or, maybe you want to go after some opportunities for sponsors if you can prove you have enough of a following – if you watched Post Malone & Travis Barker’s recent stream that blew up the internet, you may have noticed they were raising funds for a great cause, and there was definitely some product placement involved. Think about brands that you might share common values with and do what you gotta do to get their attention! This doesn’t even have to be big mega name brands, a local business might be thrilled to hook up with you, maybe you have an audience whose attention they’d like more of. I’ve seen Terra Lightfoot partner with a local cafe and a local jewellery designer for her weekly livestream sets. Set your sights on mutually beneficial partnerships.

Who with?

  • Will you go it alone (I do not recommend this)?
  • Will you collaborate with another artist or an organized livestream festival?
  • Reach out to artists you may have a common audience with if your goal is to expand your reach as it will lend yourself to other audiences in an organic sense.

Start getting ideas

  • Look at what other artists (particularly those who are at a place in their career where you would like to see yourself) are doing with their livestreams. Obvs, don’t rip them off, but get a sense of how they are marketing their shows and timing them. How are you going to want your performance to look? What does your space look like? Maybe now’s the time to do some good scrubbing 😅
  • Watch this webinar! MusicBC did a webinar on May 8 that gives really valuable insights from artists who have been using different platforms mentioned above and will make you think about things that will really sharpen your show. Moderated by Grant Paley of Paquin Artists Agency, featuring Juno-nom, Jill Barber, Sage McBride of Shred Kelly, and Nick Middleton of Westwood Recordings.

2. Promote!

There is A LOT going on in the digital landscape right now. Not only are there hundreds of thousands artists fighting for the captive audience, there’s also a lot happening in the world of video games and Netflix these days too. We’re even seeing artists performing IN video games. The point is – you need to strategize how people are going to find out about your stream, and how they will remember to check it out.

  • If you established in step 1 that your goal is to expand your audience – are you going to buy some social media ads? These can be effective if you target the right users;
  • Remember that your own social media feeds (FB & IG specifically) are subject to the algorithms of that platform, so you can self-promote on your channels all you want, chances are the only people who are going to see it are the ones who regularly interact with your pages – not helpful if your goal is broadening your reach;
  • Those partnerships and relationships I recommend building in step 1 will help with this – if someone else has a stake in this they will also be promoting;
  • Don’t underestimate the power of a mailing list! If you aren’t already collecting your fans email addresses through your webpage (yes you should have this too you can’t just rely on socials), then get started on that.
